Off The Grid

Gunzilla Games has confirmed that Off The Grid will finally leave Early Access and launch its 1.0 version over the 2026 holiday season. The announcement comes later than the October release window originally outlined in the studio’s roadmap, but the developers say several major improvements have brought the cyberpunk battle royale closer to its full release.

Alongside the announcement, Gunzilla shared some impressive development statistics. Performance on an NVIDIA RTX 2060 has reportedly increased from 42 FPS to 164 FPS, while four-week player retention has grown by 35%. The studio also confirmed that its proprietary anti-cheat system, Kestrel, is now running across every server.

For players who have been following the project since its Early Access debut, these updates could mark an important turning point. With improved performance, stronger anti-cheat protection, and continued development of its blockchain ecosystem, Off The Grid is preparing for its next major chapter.

Off The Grid 1.0 Arrives Over the Holidays

Gunzilla Games announced the revised release window through the official Off The Grid X account, confirming that version 1.0 is scheduled to arrive over the holidays.

The game was initially expected to complete its Early Access period in October 2026. However, the studio has decided to push the launch back, giving the development team additional time to deliver the improvements promised earlier in the year.

The announcement highlighted five months of development and five major releases, with the developers describing the progress as a significant transformation of the game.

One particularly interesting detail was the mention of Teardrop, suggesting that the studio has substantially rebuilt parts of the experience rather than simply adding new content.

Although Gunzilla has not provided an exact launch date, players can continue exploring the game on PC and consoles while waiting for the full release.

Major Performance Improvements on PC

Performance optimization is one of the biggest achievements highlighted in the latest announcement.

According to Gunzilla, Off The Grid now reaches 164 FPS on an RTX 2060, compared with just 42 FPS previously. That's a substantial improvement for players using mid-range hardware.

The optimization process has been underway since the summer. A July update reportedly delivered frame-rate improvements of up to 100 FPS on lower-end systems.

However, the developers haven't limited their work to technical performance. The same update also introduced a comprehensive weapon overhaul.

The changes covered several important gameplay elements, including:

  • Fire modes and weapon handling.

  • Recoil patterns and bullet spread.

  • Weapon range and combat balance.

  • Cyberlimb functionality and customization.

These adjustments matter because Off The Grid combines traditional shooter mechanics with cybernetic abilities and extraction gameplay. Better performance and more consistent weapon behavior can make encounters feel more responsive, particularly during intense firefights.

Player Retention Increases by 35%

Another interesting statistic concerns player retention.

Gunzilla reported a 35% increase in four-week retention, suggesting that more players are continuing to play Off The Grid over longer periods.

Retention is an important metric for live-service games. A successful launch can attract thousands of players, but maintaining an active community requires regular updates, balanced gameplay, competitive opportunities, and reasons to return.

Gunzilla did not disclose the baseline used to calculate its retention increase, so the exact number of returning players remains unclear.

Still, the reported improvement suggests that the studio's recent development efforts may be helping the game maintain player interest.

The team also revealed that it has delivered 11 promises from its 2026 roadmap so far. While several milestones remain, the announcement provides an indication of how much work has gone into preparing the game for version 1.0.

Kestrel Anti-Cheat Now Protects Every Server

Cheating is a persistent problem for competitive multiplayer games, particularly battle royales where a single unfair advantage can ruin an entire match.

Gunzilla is addressing this issue through Kestrel, its proprietary anti-cheat technology, which is now active across every Off The Grid server.

The system was introduced on October 9, 2026, initially launching in beta. Unlike conventional detection methods that primarily search for known cheating software, Kestrel uses machine learning to analyze player movement and identify suspicious input patterns.

The developers claim that the technology can recognize behavior associated with cheating software, even when offenders switch accounts or computers.

Before its first ban wave, Kestrel completed a passive telemetry phase that analyzed more than 15 billion gameplay data segments across the game's match network.

The first wave of bans followed on October 21, with the system targeting cheaters on Teardrop Island.

According to Gunzilla, Kestrel now operates around the clock in every match. Players identified as cheaters receive a five-second warning before enforcement action takes place.

Importantly, Kestrel does not replace Easy Anti-Cheat. The existing kernel-level protection remains active on PC, meaning both systems work alongside each other.

Gunzilla has also suggested that Kestrel could eventually be integrated into other games, potentially opening the door for additional studios to use its technology.

What Happened to the 2026 Roadmap?

Gunzilla published its 2026 development roadmap on May 29, dividing the planned improvements into five phases scheduled between June and October.

The roadmap covered several areas of development, including engine optimization, weapon balancing, progression improvements, and a rebuilt marketplace.

Other planned features included:

  • New Legendary Weapons.

  • Proximity voice chat.

  • An expanded game map.

  • Marketplace improvements.

  • Ranked Season 3 and creator-focused activities.

  • Integration with the GUNZ mainnet.

  • AI-powered anti-cheat technology.

Phase 04, originally scheduled for September, focused on introducing the AI anti-cheat system and completing the transition to the GUNZ mainnet.

Phase 05 was expected to arrive in October, bringing creator and streamer initiatives alongside the beginning of Ranked Season 3.

The revised holiday release window means the original schedule has changed, but Gunzilla's latest announcement emphasizes the progress made across its development commitments.

The studio's long-term approach was also reflected in CEO Vlad Korolev's earlier statement that building Off The Grid has always been a long-term commitment.

What Makes Off The Grid Different?

10

For anyone unfamiliar with the project, Off The Grid is a free-to-play third-person battle royale shooter developed by Gunzilla Games.

The project also involves filmmaker Neill Blomkamp as its visionary director, bringing a cinematic approach to its cyberpunk setting.

The game takes place in a futuristic world where contestants equipped with cybernetic enhancements are dropped onto Teardrop Island to participate in a televised bloodsport.

Its gameplay combines several familiar genres:

  • Battle royale: Players fight against opponents while attempting to survive on a large island.

  • Extraction mechanics: Looting and extracting valuable equipment add another layer of strategy.

  • Cybernetic customization: Cyberlimbs provide different movement and combat abilities.

  • Narrative storytelling: Gunzilla is also developing a 60-hour campaign set within the same universe.

This combination gives Off The Grid a different identity compared with traditional battle royale shooters.

The developers are not simply building another competitive survival game. They are creating an interconnected cyberpunk universe that can support multiplayer battles, progression, storytelling, and digital ownership.

How Blockchain Technology Fits Into Off The Grid

Blockchain integration is another important part of the project's ecosystem, although it remains optional for players.

Off The Grid uses GUNZ, Gunzilla's own blockchain built on Avalanche technology. It allows certain in-game assets, including weapons, skins, and cybernetic limbs, to exist as tradable NFTs.

This means players can participate in the game's traditional shooter experience without interacting with blockchain technology. Those interested in digital ownership, however, can explore the marketplace and trade eligible assets.

The ecosystem has already demonstrated activity. In September 2026, GUNZ reportedly recorded 636 on-chain marketplace sales in a single month, representing a combined value of 1.5 million GUN.

For the broader blockchain gaming ecosystem, this approach is interesting because it connects digital ownership with a conventional multiplayer experience.

Instead of making blockchain interaction mandatory, Gunzilla allows players to decide whether they want to participate in its NFT economy.

This could make the game more accessible to traditional shooter fans while still offering additional opportunities for Web3 enthusiasts.

Competitive Events Keep the Community Active

Gunzilla has also been investing in competitive activities to maintain interest between major updates.

During the summer, Off The Grid hosted a Summer League featuring a $5,000 prize pool distributed across five weekends.

Competitive events can play an important role in building a long-term community, especially for games that combine battle royale mechanics with progression and equipment customization.

With the full release approaching, additional tournaments, ranked activities, and creator initiatives could become important parts of the game's future.

However, Gunzilla has not yet shared a complete schedule of competitive events planned for the 1.0 launch.

Can Off The Grid Deliver on Its Full Release?

Off The Grid first targeted a 2023 release, making its journey toward version 1.0 considerably longer than initially expected. Early Access officially began on October 8, 2024, followed by its Steam release on July 17, 2025.

The game is currently available through the Epic Games Store, Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Mac, with additional access through GeForce NOW.

The holiday launch will represent an important milestone for Gunzilla Games. The reported performance improvements, stronger retention, and deployment of Kestrel suggest that the studio has been focusing on several of the issues that matter most to multiplayer communities.

The next challenge will be bringing everything together into a polished full-release experience.

For players, the good news is that there is no need to wait until version 1.0 to jump into the action. Early Access remains available, giving newcomers and returning players an opportunity to explore Teardrop Island before the holiday launch.

If Gunzilla delivers on its remaining plans, Off The Grid could enter its next chapter with a stronger technical foundation and a more established player community.
