Ubisoft is officially bringing the curtain down on Champions Tactics, marking the end of one of the gaming industry's most ambitious blockchain experiments. After gradually removing its Web3 features earlier this year, the publisher has now confirmed that the game's servers will permanently shut down on October 30.
While players can continue battling until the final day, the announcement signals the end of Ubisoft's first original blockchain-powered title. It's a story that highlights both the opportunities and challenges facing modern Web3 gaming, especially as major publishers continue to evaluate their place in the space.
If you're interested in following the latest developments across Blockchain games, this shutdown is certainly one of the biggest stories of the year.
Ubisoft Confirms Champions Tactics Shutdown
Ubisoft revealed that Champions Tactics will remain playable until October 30, giving its remaining community several more months to enjoy the game before the servers are switched off permanently.
However, one important change has already taken effect. In-app purchases have been disabled across every platform, meaning players can no longer spend money on the game. This is a common practice during game sunsets, preventing users from making purchases shortly before a title becomes unavailable.
The publisher thanked players for their passion and support throughout the game's life and stated that additional reminders and updates will be shared as the shutdown date approaches.
What Players Need to Know
Unlike games that simply lose online features while remaining playable offline, Champions Tactics is facing a complete server shutdown.
That means:
The game remains fully playable until October 30.
All in-app purchases have already been disabled.
Once servers close, the game will no longer be accessible.
No online gameplay or progression will remain after the shutdown.
For existing fans, these final months represent the last opportunity to experience the tactical RPG before it disappears entirely.
From Web3 Pioneer to Traditional Game
The shutdown didn't come out of nowhere.
Earlier in May 2026, Ubisoft announced it would gradually remove the blockchain infrastructure that powered the game's Web3 economy. At the time, the company explained that changes to its supporting blockchain ecosystem required a transition away from on-chain functionality.
Several major systems were retired during that process:
Player wallets were locked.
An inventory snapshot was taken.
The Forge permanently closed.
The Marketplace stopped operating.
NFT trading and forging ended forever.
Despite those significant changes, players were still able to keep using their Champions, VIP benefits, and progression inside the game itself.
Now, with the upcoming server closure, even that remaining experience is coming to an end.
A Look Back at Champions Tactics
Released on October 23, 2024, Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles represented Ubisoft's first fully original Web3 game.
Set in the dark fantasy world of Grimoria, players built squads of three Champions before facing opponents in strategic PvP battles. Success depended on assembling the right team composition, predicting enemy lineups, and carefully timing each Champion's abilities.
One of the game's biggest selling points was its hybrid design.
Players could compete using free-to-play ethereal Champions, while collectors could also own NFT-backed Champions on the Oasys blockchain. At launch, Ubisoft introduced 75,000 unique collectible Champions, aiming to combine digital ownership with competitive tactical gameplay.
Visually, the game received praise for its impressive art direction, detailed character designs, and darker atmosphere, with many comparing its aesthetic to Darkest Dungeon.
Launch Problems Hurt Early Momentum
Unfortunately, Champions Tactics never enjoyed the smooth launch Ubisoft had hoped for.
The project was originally announced back in June 2023, accompanied by The Warlords, a free mint of 9,999 pixel-art NFTs on Ethereum that would later unlock playable characters.
By the time the full game finally launched in late 2024, enthusiasm around NFTs had cooled considerably.
Things became even more difficult almost immediately.
Within days of release, one player discovered and abused a matchmaking exploit that automatically awarded victories. The exploit allowed thousands of wins to accumulate, effectively dominating the rankings and making competitive play frustrating for many legitimate players.
Although Ubisoft addressed the situation, the damage to the game's reputation had already been done.
Champions Tactics Reforged Failed to Revive Interest
Rather than abandoning the franchise immediately, Ubisoft attempted one final reboot.
In May 2026, the company introduced Champions Tactics Reforged, repositioning the game as a free-to-play strategy title on Steam with less emphasis on blockchain technology and a greater focus on tactical gameplay.
The hope was that removing the Web3 label would attract a broader audience.
Instead, the relaunch struggled to gain momentum.
Although the game briefly reached around 1,500 concurrent players, activity quickly dropped. Community feedback frequently criticized its monetization, with many describing the gacha mechanics as overly aggressive or leaning toward pay-to-win gameplay.
Ultimately, the pivot wasn't enough to rebuild a sustainable player base.
Part of Ubisoft's Larger Restructuring
The decision to retire Champions Tactics also reflects broader changes happening across Ubisoft.
Over the past year, the publisher has been reducing costs through studio closures, organizational restructuring, and significant workforce reductions. The company has also announced plans to lower fixed operating expenses even further.
Against that backdrop, discontinuing a game that struggled to achieve long-term commercial success becomes easier to understand.
Rather than continuing to support a niche title with a shrinking audience, Ubisoft appears focused on directing resources toward projects with stronger growth potential.
What This Means for Blockchain Gaming
The end of Champions Tactics doesn't necessarily signal the end of blockchain gaming, but it does provide valuable lessons for both traditional publishers and Web3 developers.
Timing played a major role. Ubisoft entered the NFT gaming market after much of the initial excitement had already faded. Combined with technical issues, shifting player sentiment, and an unsuccessful transition away from blockchain mechanics, the project never found the long-term audience it needed.
Even so, the experiment demonstrated that large AAA publishers are willing to explore new ownership models and digital economies. Future blockchain games will likely build upon these experiences, placing greater emphasis on gameplay first while ensuring Web3 features genuinely enhance the player experience instead of defining it.
For now, Champions Tactics will remain playable until October 30 before joining the growing list of ambitious live-service games that ultimately couldn't sustain their communities. While its journey has come to an end, its legacy will remain an important chapter in the ongoing evolution of blockchain gaming.
