Moonfrost

Moonfrost is finally ready to take its next big step. Oxalis Games has confirmed that its cozy farm life RPG will enter Steam Early Access on October 12, giving players a chance to explore a much larger version of its world for $14.99.

The launch is particularly interesting for the blockchain gaming community because Moonfrost has taken a very different path from its original Web3 direction. Once connected to blockchain gaming and NFTs, the project has now transformed into a premium PC title focused entirely on gameplay, storytelling, farming, exploration, and relationships.

For players who have been following the project, Early Access represents both a new beginning and the next chapter of a development journey that has already lasted several years.

Moonfrost Finally Gets Its Early Access Date

Oxalis Games revealed the October 12 release date on September 29 alongside a new trailer. Rather than presenting Early Access as a finished product, the studio sees it as another stage in the game's development.

That approach should feel familiar to anyone who has followed Moonfrost. Player feedback has played an important role throughout development, and the team plans to continue using community input as it expands the story, village, characters, and gameplay systems before the eventual version 1.0 release.

At launch, players can expect a substantial portion of the game rather than a small preview.

The Early Access build includes:

  • Around 50% of the main storyline

  • Temple progression up to Level 19

  • 11 villagers to meet and befriend

  • Relationship progression up to Level 3

  • Village rebuilding mechanics

  • Expanded character customisation

  • A new in-game map

  • Updated quest and task tracking

  • New crafting puzzles and decorations

For fans of blockchain games, Moonfrost is also an interesting example of how a game can evolve considerably during development.

Rebuilding a Village From the Ground Up

At the heart of Moonfrost is a familiar but satisfying concept: taking a damaged place and making it feel alive again.

Players arrive in a world affected by devastating meteor storms and take on the role of a Frost Hunter. Instead of simply building a farm from scratch, they also have the much larger task of helping restore a shattered village.

That means cleaning up leaves, rubbish, and grime, repairing damaged streets, and gradually bringing neglected areas back to life.

The rebuilding system ties neatly into the game's broader philosophy. Progress isn't only about collecting resources or completing quests. It is also about watching the world around the player change as their efforts begin to make a visible difference.

Friends, Farming and a Mysterious Story

Moonfrost may look cozy on the surface, but there is considerably more happening beneath its colorful exterior.

The game combines farming and crafting with exploration, relationships, and puzzle solving. Players can spend their days working on the village, growing crops, crafting objects, or getting to know its inhabitants.

Eleven NPCs will be available to befriend in the Early Access launch build, with relationships progressing up to Level 3.

The social side is especially important because the characters are designed to have their own routines and activities around the village. Recent developer diaries have highlighted the work being done to make NPCs feel more active and believable.

And then there is the mystery surrounding the Second Moon.

Behind the relaxed farm-life experience is a darker narrative about what happened to the world. As players explore Moonfrost, they will gradually uncover more of the story and investigate the mysteries surrounding the strange celestial event.

The Temple Adds a Different Kind of Challenge

The village isn't the only place worth exploring.

Moonfrost also features the Temple, which introduces a more dungeon-like experience into the otherwise cozy RPG formula. Players will be able to progress through 19 Temple levels in the Early Access build while solving puzzles along the way.

This creates an interesting contrast with the game's farming and social systems.

One moment players can be tending their village or chatting with an NPC, while the next they can be exploring a mysterious location and working through environmental challenges.

The Temple also gives Moonfrost a stronger exploration component, helping the game move beyond the traditional farming-simulation formula.

More Customisation and Quality-of-Life Features

The October release isn't simply bringing more content. Oxalis Games has also been working on improving the overall player experience.

Character customisation has been expanded, giving players more freedom to create a character that fits their preferred look.

A new in-game map should make navigation easier, particularly as the world continues to expand. Quest and task tracking have also been updated, helping players keep track of what they are working toward.

Crafting is receiving attention too, with new puzzles connected to decorative items.

These additions may sound relatively small individually, but together they can make a significant difference in a game built around daily routines, exploration, and long-term progression.

Four Years of Development Behind Moonfrost

The Early Access announcement comes after months of regular development updates.

In July, the Moonfrost demo received Japanese localisation. August brought developer diaries showing new NPC routines, village activities, pixel art, and environmental objects.

In September, the team introduced members of the development team and reflected on Moonfrost's journey.

According to Oxalis Games, the game has changed considerably over roughly four years of development. However, the studio says its core ambition has remained consistent: creating a world filled with memorable characters, stories, and places worth exploring.

The project has also collected some impressive milestones along the way. Moonfrost won Best Art Direction in 2024, appeared as a lead indie game at EGX Comic Con London 24, and reached the top 20 most-wishlisted games on the Epic Games Store. The game also recorded more than 50,000 organic sign-ups in 2024 without paid marketing.

From Web3 Ambitions to a Premium Steam RPG

Perhaps the biggest change surrounding Moonfrost is what players won't find in the Steam version.

The project originally had a Web3 component. In March 2025, Oxalis Games partnered with Open Loot, and Moonfrost introduced its FROST-Hunter License genesis NFT following a playtest.

However, the studio eventually decided to change direction.

In June 2026, Oxalis Games announced that Moonfrost would move away from the Open Loot platform. The team explained that supporting both Web2 and Web3 audiences had become unsustainable and that the game's development requirements did not fit the expectations surrounding blockchain gaming.

As a result, the Steam version contains no crypto, NFTs, tokens, or blockchain features.

Instead, Moonfrost is now positioned as a straightforward premium PC game with a $14.99 price tag.

Players who supported the earlier Web3 version have not simply been forgotten, either. Oxalis Games created Frost Arcade, a browser-based platform featuring multiplayer modes, co-op gameplay, leaderboards, and community events. Existing items such as workbenches, axes, gnomes, and premium tokens remain usable there.

What Comes Next for Moonfrost?

The October 12 launch is only the beginning.

Oxalis Games has already confirmed that additional story content, characters, relationships, Temple levels, and features will arrive throughout Early Access. That means the version launching on Steam should be viewed as a foundation for the larger Moonfrost experience.

For players, the appeal is straightforward: farming, crafting, exploration, puzzles, village restoration, and friendships wrapped inside a mysterious world affected by meteor storms.

For the blockchain gaming audience, however, Moonfrost offers another fascinating story. Its development shows how projects can change direction when the needs of the game, studio, and audience evolve.

Moonfrost launches into Steam Early Access on October 12 for $14.99. The demo remains available ahead of release, giving curious players a chance to experience its cozy world before stepping into the full Early Access adventure.
