HYTOPIA WORLDS Enters Public Alpha

HYTOPIA is returning to its roots with WORLDS, a new browser-based MMO-lite game that blends Minecraft-style building, RuneScape-inspired progression, and cooperative exploration. Now available in public alpha, the free-to-play experience invites players to gather resources, craft equipment, battle dangerous creatures, and build a home that grows alongside their adventures.
For fans of sandbox games and blockchain games, WORLDS is an interesting project to watch. It brings HYTOPIA's block-based technology back into the spotlight while shifting the team's focus toward developing its own game rather than building a platform for other studios.
With 12 skills to master, 15 equipment tiers to unlock, and expeditions packed with treasure and danger, WORLDS aims to deliver a progression-driven adventure that players can enjoy alone or with friends.
HYTOPIA WORLDS Is Now in Public Alpha
HYTOPIA officially opened the public alpha for WORLDS on October 17, 2026. The game is free to play and runs directly in a browser, with support for PC, Mac, and mobile devices.
Its central idea combines familiar sandbox mechanics with the long-term progression systems associated with classic MMORPGs. Players can explore new environments, collect materials, develop different skills, and gradually improve their equipment while discovering what the world has to offer.
WORLDS also puts cooperative gameplay at the center of the experience. Players can adventure alone, invite friends, or join other explorers for expeditions with up to eight participants.
Interested players can access the alpha through the official WORLDS website.
HYTOPIA has also confirmed that early testers will receive a special gift when the game officially launches. The team has not revealed all the details surrounding the reward, but it gives players another reason to try the game before its full release.
Explore Dangerous Worlds and Gather Resources
WORLDS revolves around two connected experiences: a permanent home world and a collection of expeditions.
The home serves as a personal base where players can build, craft, organize resources, and improve their facilities. Expeditions, meanwhile, take players into new environments filled with materials, enemies, hidden treasures, and increasingly dangerous challenges.
Players access these journeys through a guide and a caravan. Each expedition offers opportunities to gather valuable resources, but greater danger also means potentially greater rewards.
There is an important catch, however. Items collected during an expedition can be lost, making every trip a calculated risk rather than a simple resource-gathering exercise.
Expedition environments include:
Caves and underwater grottos hiding valuable materials.
Floating islands offering new places to explore.
Volcanic regions filled with dangerous encounters.
Buried labyrinths containing secrets and treasure.
Ruined aqueducts and fortified structures waiting to be explored.
Some treasure chests require players to defeat enemies or complete combat challenges before they can claim their rewards.
Movement also goes beyond simply walking across the landscape. Gliders, boats, diving equipment, and hookshots provide different ways to navigate the environment, giving exploration a more varied feel.
Team Up With Friends for Eight-Player Adventures
Although solo exploration is possible, WORLDS encourages players to share their adventures.
Parties can include up to eight players, allowing friends to explore dangerous locations, fight enemies together, and collect resources as a team. Players can also chat and visit each other's homes, adding a social element that extends beyond individual expeditions.
Cooperative play could become particularly important when facing stronger enemies or exploring higher-risk environments. A group can divide responsibilities, combine different equipment, and help one another overcome challenges that might be difficult to handle alone.
For players who enjoy the community side of sandbox MMORPGs, this combination of shared exploration and personal progression could be one of WORLDS' most appealing features.
Master 12 Skills and Reach Level 99
One of WORLDS' defining features is its RuneScape-inspired progression system. Instead of relying exclusively on traditional character levels, the game lets players develop individual skills by using them.
There are 12 skills available in the alpha, and each can reach level 99.
The skill list includes:
Exploration: Discover new locations and venture into unfamiliar environments.
Mining: Gather valuable ores and other underground resources.
Fishing: Collect fish and other useful aquatic resources.
Woodcutting: Harvest wood for construction and crafting.
Foraging: Gather materials from the natural environment.
Combat: Improve your ability to fight enemies.
Climbing: Reach elevated areas and navigate difficult terrain.
Diving: Explore underwater locations.
Smelting: Process raw materials into usable metals.
Crafting: Create equipment and other useful items.
Cooking: Prepare meals to support your adventures.
Alchemy: Produce tonics and other consumable items.
This system encourages players to develop their characters through the activities they enjoy most. Someone who prefers gathering and crafting can focus on those skills, while another player might prioritize combat and exploration.
As skills improve, players gain access to a deeper progression loop that connects resource collection, equipment creation, and increasingly challenging expeditions.
Craft Gear Across 15 Equipment Tiers
Progression in WORLDS is closely connected to crafting. The game features 15 equipment tiers, starting with basic flint tools and progressing toward powerful legendary armor.
Materials become more advanced as players progress, with copper, iron, mythril, and dragon-related tiers forming part of the equipment journey. The system encourages players to collect increasingly valuable resources and invest time in improving their gear.
Several crafting stations support this process, including furnaces, hearths, blacksmithing stations, and enchanting tables.
Combat equipment includes swords, bows, armor, and enchanted items. Players can also prepare meals and alchemical tonics to improve their chances of surviving difficult encounters.
Enemies range from hostile creatures and skeletons to golems and bosses, providing different challenges as players explore more dangerous areas.
Equipment maintenance also plays a role. Materials can be used for repairs and upgrades, while unwanted items may be salvaged. This creates additional value for resources collected during expeditions and gives players more reasons to refine their crafting skills.
Build a Home and Welcome New Residents
WORLDS isn't only about exploring dangerous environments. Each player also gets a home that develops over time.
At first, this might be a modest house or camp. As players gather materials and improve their crafting stations, they can expand their living space and decorate it with items such as paintings, a grandfather clock, and trophies collected during their adventures.
The home system also introduces residents.
During expeditions, players can encounter travelers who need assistance. Completing their requests may convince them to settle in the player's home, turning a simple base into a more active settlement.
Residents can provide practical benefits. A surveyor can help identify treasure chests, while a trader operates a stall with changing stock. Other residents supply resources daily.
This creates another reason to explore beyond simply finding better equipment. Helping travelers can improve the home environment and unlock additional benefits that support future adventures.
A Marketplace Is Planned for Future Trading
HYTOPIA also plans to introduce a market featuring a global order book for in-game materials.
Once available, players should be able to trade resources through the in-game market or a dedicated marketplace website. Such a system could give gathered materials additional value by allowing players to exchange surplus resources for items they need.
For example, someone focused on mining might collect metals to trade with a player who spends more time gathering other materials. A functioning marketplace could connect these different playstyles and make the game's economy more dynamic.
However, the market is not open yet. Its eventual implementation and the details of how trading will work remain important developments to watch.
Although WORLDS comes from a Web3 gaming project, players should not assume that every in-game item will automatically be an NFT or that all activities will generate cryptocurrency rewards. The currently described alpha focuses on exploration, crafting, combat, and progression.
Alpha Progress and Early Tester Rewards
Since opening on October 17, WORLDS has already expanded its language support. Within days of launch, HYTOPIA introduced full translations in Simplified Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, Vietnamese, Korean, and Japanese. French and German translations are also planned.
Still, players should remember that the game remains in an early testing phase.
HYTOPIA has warned that worlds and saves may be reset during development, including when WORLDS transitions to open beta and eventually reaches full release. No end date for the alpha has been announced.
The confirmed launch gift for early testers is one incentive to participate now. Players could also potentially qualify for a whitelist if the team proceeds with a future free mint.
That possibility remains unconfirmed, though. HYTOPIA has not announced that a mint will definitely happen, so players should treat it as a potential future development rather than a guaranteed reward.
From NFT Worlds to HYTOPIA WORLDS
WORLDS represents a significant change in direction for the project, bringing it closer to its original identity.
The project began as NFT Worlds in October 2021, offering a Web3 layer built around Minecraft. Players could participate in a community centered on player-owned virtual worlds and blockchain-related features.
That approach changed in July 2022, when Mojang prohibited blockchain integrations in Minecraft. The team subsequently rebranded as HYTOPIA and began developing its own technology rather than relying on Minecraft.
The project received a $3 million investment from Delphi Digital and explored a broader vision of becoming a platform for other game developers. It released a game-building SDK, introduced a $125,000 creator fund, announced the HY Foundation, and planned a move to Base.
However, in September 2026, co-founder ArkDev acknowledged that the platform-focused approach had not worked out as intended. He outlined a new direction centered on the team's own game, which eventually became WORLDS.
The original Worlds NFT collection, now known as TOPIA Worlds, has also moved from Polygon to Arbitrum.
With WORLDS, HYTOPIA is putting its own block-based engine at the center of the project rather than relying primarily on third-party developers to build its ecosystem.
Can WORLDS Find Its Place in Web3 Gaming?
WORLDS brings together several familiar ideas: block-based construction, skill-based progression, loot-driven exploration, cooperative combat, and a home that gradually develops alongside the player.
Its public alpha already includes many of the features outlined in the project's earlier vision, including large expedition maps, equipment progression, and co-op adventures for up to eight players. The combination of permanent homes and potentially risky expeditions gives players two complementary reasons to keep exploring.
For HYTOPIA, the bigger challenge will be turning this early foundation into a sustainable game that keeps players engaged beyond the initial excitement. The planned marketplace, future content, and eventual full release could all influence how the experience develops.
For now, WORLDS is available to try for free at worldsalpha.com. Players interested in sandbox adventures, MMORPG progression, and the evolution of Web3 gaming can explore the alpha and see how HYTOPIA's return to its roots takes shape.
