Fortnite FNCS 2027 Brings Trios Back
The competitive Fortnite scene is already looking ahead. At the FNCS Globals 2026 event in Antwerp, Belgium, on September 27, Epic Games officially announced several major plans for Fortnite FNCS 2027 — and the biggest news is that Trios are returning.
More than 1 million players voted through the Legends Landing UEFN island during the event to bring the three-player format back. Epic responded by confirming Trios for the 2027 FNCS season, alongside two Reload Championships and a brand-new Arenas Fight Night cup.
For players who follow competitive shooters, esports, and even the wider world of blockchain games, this is an interesting example of how strongly player communities can influence the direction of a live-service game.
Trios Return After a Duos Season
FNCS 2026 was played in Duos, marking a significant departure from the Trios format used during the 2025 season.
That previous Trios season ended with Swizzy, Merstach, and Queasy claiming the Global Championship together. In 2026, however, competitors had to adapt to a two-player setup, with Swizzy ultimately winning the FNCS Globals alongside Pixie.
Now the competitive ecosystem is changing again.
The return to Trios means players will once again have to think about Fortnite through a three-person strategic lens. While the basic mechanics remain familiar, adding another player dramatically changes how teams approach fights, rotations, resources, and late-game positioning.
And this time, the decision came with a clear community signal: more than one million votes supported bringing Trios back.
What Trios Changes for Competitive Fortnite
Moving from Duos to Trios isn't simply a matter of adding another player. Competitive teams need to reconsider almost everything about their compositions.
A successful Trio needs players who can complement each other's strengths. Communication becomes even more important, while teams have another player available for scouting, fighting, rotating, or supporting teammates.

This could also shake up established competitive rosters. Organizations that performed strongly in the Duos era may decide that their existing combinations aren't ideal for Trios.
At the same time, players whose abilities were better suited to a three-person squad could get a fresh opportunity.
Three New Championship Events
Epic's FNCS 2027 announcement isn't only about bringing Trios back. The developer also revealed three new championship events that will expand the competitive calendar beyond the traditional Battle Royale structure.
The announced events are:
Reload Builds Championship — a tournament focused on the Reload Builds mode.
Zero Build Reload Championship — a dedicated competitive event for Zero Build Reload players.
Arenas Fight Night — a new cup aimed at players who enjoy competitive boxfighting.
These additions could give more specialized Fortnite communities a chance to compete on an official stage.
Reload Gets Its Own Competitive Spotlight
Reload has become an important part of Fortnite's broader gameplay offering, and FNCS 2027 will give the mode even more competitive attention.
The Reload Builds Championship will provide a dedicated event for players who prefer the faster-paced Reload experience while retaining building mechanics.
Meanwhile, the Zero Build Reload Championship targets a different audience. Zero Build has developed a substantial player base, and giving its Reload variant a dedicated championship creates another competitive pathway outside the traditional FNCS structure.
For players who enjoy faster matches and different combat dynamics, these tournaments could become important events on the 2027 calendar.
Arenas Fight Night Adds Boxfighting Competition
Perhaps the most unusual announcement is Arenas Fight Night.
Boxfighting has long been a major part of Fortnite's practice and competitive culture. Players regularly use boxfight scenarios to sharpen their building, editing, aiming, and close-range decision-making skills.
However, there hasn't previously been an official FNCS championship event specifically built around this style of competition.
Arenas Fight Night could therefore provide a new competitive outlet for players who specialize in these intense, skill-focused encounters.
Epic hasn't yet revealed the full rules, prize pool, or qualification system for the event, so there are still plenty of questions surrounding how it will work.
When Will FNCS 2027 Begin?
For now, Epic hasn't announced the official FNCS 2027 start date or released the complete Majors schedule.
That information is expected to arrive with the full FNCS 2027 roadmap.
One important date is already on the horizon, though: Fortnite Chapter 8 is scheduled to launch in December 2026. A new chapter typically brings major changes to the map and loot pool, meaning competitive players will have plenty to learn before the next FNCS season gets fully underway.
The gap between FNCS Globals 2026 and the beginning of the 2027 season should also give professional players time to build their new Trios.
New Rosters Could Reshape the Scene
The switch back to Trios makes roster-building one of the most interesting storylines heading into 2027.
Swizzy, for example, has now won FNCS Globals in both the 2025 Trios era and the 2026 Duos season. After winning the latest Global Championship with Pixie, the question becomes which two players could join him for another championship run.
Of course, the competitive field is much larger than any single player.
The return to Trios could result in completely new combinations, with established stars joining forces alongside players who may have been overlooked during the Duos season. Teams will need to find the right balance between mechanical skill, communication, leadership, and role specialization.

The FNCS 2027 announcement gives competitive Fortnite players plenty to look forward to, even though several important details remain unknown.
