HyperPlay, a Web3 game launcher that aims to increase blockchain gaming adoption, has been released in early access. Developed by ex-MetaMask operations lead JacobC.eth and blockchain gaming DAO Game7, HyperPlay was first announced in November 2022.
The game launcher seeks to increase Web3 wallet interoperability in the PC gaming industry by allowing players to enter every game with the same wallet containing their NFTs, tokens, and achievements. HyperPlay explicitly supports MetaMask, although it does support WalletConnect as well. Players can connect their wallets to the launcher and use them to complete transactions in every desktop game installed and launched from HyperPlay without switching windows, ensuring complete security.
"We're separating the keys from the game," said JacobC.eth in an interview with Decrypt. "If the game is malicious, you don't want your secret recovery phrase exposed to the game." With this separation, users of HyperPlay are protected even if one of its vetted games is compromised.
While playing a desktop game, MetaMask users will receive popups for transactions on their mobile phones and browser extensions, which will be automatically detected by HyperPlay. Developers can build for free on its open-source platform, which provides a simple API for native games to integrate with MetaMask.
HyperPlay's support for multiple game stores is intentional, as developers should be free to release their games through any store they choose without fear of de-platforming or extractive fees imposed by Web2 monopolies like Apple or Steam. At launch, the game launcher will offer multiple games, including DeFi Kingdoms, Undead Blocks, The Sandbox, Defi Kingdoms, and more. HyperPlay will also act as a game store aggregator, with Good Old Games and Epic Games stores accessible through its interface.
HyperPlay is now available on Windows, Linux, and MacOS, offering gamers more choice and flexibility when it comes to choosing a game store. Its aim is to spearhead the adoption of blockchain gaming by making it more accessible, secure, and user-friendly for gamers and developers alike.
